Richard Sadler takes top spot in motorcycle trial

Darlington and District Motor Club ran their annual Elizabeth Simpson Memorial Motorcycle Trial in Arkengarthdale.

A total of 71 competitors tackled a seven-mile lap of 16 observed sections twice within a time limit of four hours and 30 minutes in very favourable spring conditions.

Barnard Castle’s Trevor Willans was clerk of the course for the event and, with his helpers, plotted and marked the seven-mile route close to the Stang.

The overall winner of the event was the favoured runner Richard Sadler, from Leyburn, who lost only six marks over the whole course.

Richard was seven marks clear of his closest rival, the 2025 Scott Trial winner Jono Richardson.

Adam Milner made his journey over from Malton, North Yorkshire, worthwhile with a win in the inters class while local boy Callum Fowler topped the novices.

In the green 50/50 class it was veteran rider Phil Alderson, from Askrigg, who held a clear win over Kikby Fleetham’s Andrew Lishman.

Young Joe Younghusband made his trip from Consett successful, taking top honours in the clubman class from Bishop Middleham’s Amelia Mayhew.

Joe lost a total of 16 marks whilst his father Gary Younghusband parted with just nine marks in the over-40s class but was beaten into third place by Baz Chapman and Sedgefield’s Eddie Aitken.

There were two youth riders battling it out on the same course as the seniors, with Alfie Astwood losing only a respectable 32 marks to fend off Matthew Hall not far behind him.

They run again on April 19 at Penhill, West Witton, Leyburn.
