Town council signs up to toilet twin scheme

FLUSHED WITH SUCCESS: Ian Blake hands a certificate to mayor Cllr John Blissett ahead of last week's town council meeting

BARNARD Castle’s toilet twinning scheme is on a roll.

The tally of Barnard Castle toilets twinned with a loo in a developing country has reached 15.

The town council became the latest in a lengthening line of organisations and businesses to sign up to the scheme.

It sees people donate £60 so a toilet can be put up in a country where facilities do not exist and ill health through poor hygiene is rife.

In return, the organisation gets a certificate and a picture of their toilet in a distant land with GPS co-ordinates.

Barnard Castle resident Ian Blake is pioneering the scheme in Barnard Castle.

He said: “The town council’s support is a great encouragement and we are grateful that a decision was taken to make Barney a toilet twinning town.

“I’m delighted to be able to report that we have 15 toilets that have been twinned including a school block, so that equals dignity and improved health for a family to farm and buy food and further educational opportunities for youngsters, especially girls.”

He urged people to keep supporting the scheme, before suggesting: “Perhaps you can twin a toilet for Christmas – there’s more to do to flush away poverty.”
