Schools Meet parade cash boost

Five Barnard Castle schools and organisations have enjoyed a financial boost towards putting together their Meet parade fancy dress.

Meet committee members Colin Glasper and Tom Howe did a tour of the town last week dropping off cheques to St Mary’s, Montalbo and Green Lane primary schools, as well as TCR Hub and The Castle Players.

Each group was handed £250.

First stop was at St Mary’s RC School, where teacher Leanne Porter said preparations for outfits for the grand procession, which has the theme of ‘music and dance’, are already underway.

She added: “We are going with The Greatest Showman – we will be dancing all the way down the street.”

Headteacher Chris Minikin was thrilled to accept the cheque at the next stop at Montalbo Primary School.

He said: “We will have a big entry as usual – it is an important community event.”

At the next stop at Green Lane, the cash was gladly received by Carolyn Maughan. She said the school’s friends group is taking the lead in preparing for the parade this year.

Final stop was at TCR Hub where Jonny Elliott accepted the cash for the Hub, and Anne Platten and Heather Armstrong represented the The Castle Players.

This year’s grand procession takes place on the Monday of the Whit Bank holiday weekend, May 25.
