Pupils serenade shoppers while raising cash for school

ON SONG: Youngsters from Oakley Cross Primary sing out

CHILDREN from Oakley Cross Primary School, West Auckland, treated shoppers to Christmas carols while raising cash for school projects at the same time.

The children sang a range of festive favourites at Tesco’s, St Helen Auckland, in exchange for donations.

Teacher Craig Robinson said: “It is good to come out into the community and the kids love singing the songs.”

He added that the children will also be singing carols at Devonshire House care home, in West Auckland, as well as at their parish church ahead of Christmas.

Tesco’s community champion John Bailey welcomed the children’s performance at the store.

He said: “They are absolutely brilliant. We have five or six schools performing. It really sets the theme.”

He thanked the many shoppers who are supporting the store’s foodbank collection drive, which will be given to the Salvation Army and church foodbanks.

Mr Bailey said: “We collected 29 tonnes of food last year and at the moment we have collected seven tonnes.”
