Physical and psychological abuse allegations at Whorton Hall under police investigation

A NUMBER of staff from Whorlton Hall have been suspended while police investigate allegations of physical and psychological abuse.

Whorlton Hall, in Wholrton, cares for people living with learning disabilities and complex needs.

A spokesperson for Cygnet Health Care, which runs the home, confirmed that staff who had been specifically mentioned following allegations had been suspended.

The spokesperson said Cygnet Health Care had become aware of the allegations after acquiring Danshell Group, which previously managed the facility.

In a statement Cygnet group said: “We take these allegations extremely seriously. We have informed all the relevant authorities, including the Care Quality Commission, NHS commissioning authorities, social workers and the police, who are conducting an investigation.

“Whorlton Hall is currently closed to new admissions. We have transferred staff from our other facilities to ensure the safe care and protection of the hospital’s patients.”

A spokesperson for Durham police said: “Durham Constabulary can confirm that, this week, they have launched a criminal investigation regarding concerns raised about alleged physical and psychological abuse by staff at Whorlton Hall, near Barnard Castle. The police are working closely with partner agencies.”
