New pavilion for Barnard Castle bowls club to go ahead

Construction of a new pavilion at Barnard Castle Bowling Club is expected to be finished in time for the new season.

The club, in the grounds of The Bowes Museum, was granted permission for the new facility on the opposite side of the bowling green from the existing pavilion.

It will complement the existing pavilion which was built in 1908 by also being painted white with black detailing.

Club member John Tallentire said the idea of a second pavilion started four years ago.

“What I thought would be a fairly straightforward project turned into a marathon.

“Three years in, it took fresh eyes, a new and much more engaged management structure at The Bowes Museum, plus special skills and experience from some club members to breathe new life into the project.”

Mr Tallentire said there had been many consultations with museum staff, Durham County Council’s conservation officer and the planning department to get permission.

He added: “There were numerous hoops to jump through, not least biodiversity net gain, which produced a lot of headaches.

“A building has been sourced and if all goes to plan, the foundations will commence in February with the building constructed in March.”

The project was made possible through a legacy of a past member, after whom the pavilion is to be named, as well as grants from the Sports England Movement Fund and the National Lottery Community Fund.
