BARNARD Castle Meet’s carnival parade will go ahead, organisers confirmed this week saying “community spirit lives on” .
The procession, which requires a formal road closure, was in danger of being cancelled because there were not enough volunteers to help steward all the road closure points.
Organisers are keen to keep the tradition alive because police have insisted permission would not be granted to close such a major road for two hours again if the parade is not held.
Following an appeal in last week’s Mercury, Lesley Taylor, from the Meet committee, said she was delighted the event has been saved for another year.
Ms Taylor said: “The article brought a few volunteers forward and fortunately one of those was Andrea Wardle. She has talked a lot of her friends into marshalling, so now we have enough. We will also be putting up bunting on Wednesday evening, so I think we can say that community spirit lives on.”
The parade will take place on Monday, May 27, starting at 1pm at Glaxo car park. Entrants need to be there at 11.30am for judging.
