First town school to twin toilets

LATRINE SCHEME: Headteacher Rob Goffee with students Tristan

CRAZY hairdos and mutfi clothes have helped pupils at a primary school fund the twinning of not just one toilet but three for impoverished communities around the world.

Pupils at Green Lane Primary School took part in a crazy hairdo day to raise cash to become the first school in Barnard Castle to sign up to the toilet twinning scheme.

Toilet twinning campaigner Ian Blake has already encouraged St Mary’s parish church, the Firkin Alley, the Old Well and Oliviers to twin their toilets and now Green Lane School is the latest to receive certificates.

The children made so much money with their outrageous hairstyles they have been able to fund the construction of three latrines – in Malawi, Pakistan and Ivory Coast.

Deputy head teacher Nic Linsley said: “When we did it we thought we’d raise enough to fund one toilet, but we’re delighted that we’ve been able to help three communities.”
