Award-winning cook rises to the challenge

COOKING UP A STORM: Award-winning cook Lilian Carlington with pupils from Green Lane School's reception class

A SCHOOL cook’s inspiring leadership has been recognised at a national award ceremony.
Head cook at Green Lane School Lilian Carlington, 74, said she was “shocked but delighted” to be recognised at the 17th Awards for Excellence, organised by contract caterer Elior UK. Mrs Carlington, who has worked at the school since 2004, was presented her award at a ceremony in Rotherham.
She said: “There were hundreds nominated across the Elior group of companies. I never thought I would win.
“I was shocked because I thought it would be someone from the NHS who would win because of what they have been through.
“It’s nice to still be appreciated. It still feels strange as it’s what I do for my job. It is the children who make it so worthwhile.”
As well as wining a trophy Mrs Carlington was presented with £2,000 worth of holiday vouchers, which she intends to share with kitchen assistance, Audrey Guy.
She added: “She has been with me through thick and thin and I couldn’t have done without her.
“We’re going to plan where we go soon, but it’ll be in the school holidays as there
won’t be anyone left in the kitchen.”
