A TEESDALE primary school has been given an award for bringing the world into the classroom.
Bowes Hutchinson’s Primary School received the British Council’s International School Award.
It celebrates schools that do exceptional work in international education.
The British Council said fostering an international dimension in the curriculum is at the heart its work so that “young people gain the cultural understanding and skills they need for life and work” .
Bowes Hutchinson’s work includes setting up a partnership with schools in Vietnam and more recently Russia, Hungary and northern India.
Chris Matthewman, headteacher, said: “This is a well deserved recognition of the whole school’s dedicated work in creating a truly international education for our children while sharing information about our beautiful region.
“Our curriculum respects local heritage but looks outwards to develop understanding about the world.”
Sir Ciaran Devane, chief executive of the British Council, said: “Bowes Hutchinson’s Primary has brought the world into its classrooms, earning them the British Council International School Award.
“Their pupils’ education is enriched with international activities that help children develop the skills they need to thrive in a globalised world.”
The award is sought after worldwide by schools from countries such as India, Sri Lanka, Lebanon, Cyprus and Pakistan.
About 5,500 International School Awards have been presented to successful schools in the UK since the British Council scheme began in 1999.
