All aboard Soony as miniature railway prepares to welcome enthusiasts

FULL STEAM AHEAD: Soony

IT’S full steam ahead at a miniature railway during the summer holidays.

Thorpe Light Railway, based on the south bank of the River Tees, near Whorlton, is hosting its monthly open day on Sunday, August 18.

Anthony Coulls, chairman of the Friends of Thorpe Light Railway, said: What could be better than a picnic and a train ride on a narrow gauge railway?

“Just bring your picnic and buy a freshly-brewed Italian coffee or an ice-cold drink from The Barista Sisters’ coffee wagon.

“We will be running with steam locomotive Soony, visiting from the Perrygrove Railway, in Gloucestershire.”

Soony, a model of an American switching locomotive, is owned by the friends of Perrygrove.

The loco is too small to handle their passenger trains and instead she occasionally makes appearances’ at weddings, other open days and events.

Trains will be running from noon to 4pm and the entry fee is £2.50 to ride all day.

Under 5s and members ride free. Light refreshments will be available on the day.
